TAXES

The Stanly County Tax Collector's Office is responsible for sending annual property tax bills (real estate, mobile homes, boats, etc.) which are mailed in July. A discount of 2% is available for those paying prior to September 1. The deadline for paying these taxes is January 5 of the next year. Beginning January 6 these taxes are considered delinquent and are charged interest at a rate of 2% for the month of January, plus ¾% each month thereafter, and are subject to collection action such as garnishment of wages, attachment of bank accounts, levy of personal property, and foreclosure of real estate.

Registered Motor Vehicles are billed approximately 4 months after purchasing annual license tag or sticker. These bills are delinquent after 30 days and subject to 5 % interest the first month and ¾ % interest per month thereafter. Collection action may be initiated immediately upon delinquency. If the tax bill remains unpaid 120 days after billing date, the Department of Motor Vehicles is notified to place a TAX STOP on the registration of that vehicle and the license tag cannot be renewed until taxes are paid.

Delinquent taxes are subject to collection action as authorized by North Carolina General Statutes. These actions may include: garnishment of wages, attachment of bank accounts or other funds due taxpayer (including tax refunds from the NC Department of Revenue), seizure of personal property, foreclosure of real estate.

TRANSPORTATION

SCUSA provides community transportation services responsive to the current and changing needs of Stanly County residents. Transportation includes trips to and from agencies, employment sites, businesses, medical centers (in and out of county), community college, Senior Center, nutrition sites, YMCA for the after school program, dialysis, nursing homes, daycare's, etc. Services are provided utilizing vans and buses through subscription and demand response routes. Vehicles are available to better serve the disabled population.

UTILITIES

Stanly County Utilities (SCU) is responsible for the distribution of 1 million gallons of drinking water each day to more than 3300 homes, schools, churches and businesses in Stanly County. SCU operates as three water systems – Stanly County (west of Albemarle along hwy 24-27 to Locust and Stanfield, south of Albemarle to Aquadale, east of Albemarle along hwy 740 toward Badin, and northeast of Albemarle in the Palestine and Palmerville communities), Greater Badin Water & Sewer District (in the town limits of Badin) and Piney Point Water District (in the Piney Point community south of Norwood). The water provided to County consumers is purchased from the City of Albemarle and the Town of Norwood. SCU staff ensure the County’s drinking water is of high quality and provide reliable service 24 hours per day seven days per week.

SCU also provides wastewater collection and treatment to over 600 customers in the Greater Badin district. These services promote public health and sanitation in the Badin Community. The system received and treated more than 159 million gallons of domestic, commercial and industrial wastewater from customers in the year 2002.

SCU’s goal is to provide consistent, first-rate service to all County customers, promote economic development; and expand the system to serve more and more of the Stanly County’s unserved citizens each year.
